Rec room writers group
At Rec Room, we are committed to producing powerful theater that Houston truly deserves. Our mission is to develop and present innovative work by both emerging and established artists, igniting a new generation of theater audiences. A key component of this endeavor is the creation of new work that represents the rich kaleidoscope of Houston stories.
Rec Room Writers Group is the vibrant community created exclusively for Houston playwrights to thrive. We provide the space, support, and camaraderie needed to develop and workshop plays.
Within Rec Room Writers Group we've invested in nurturing the careers of local Houston playwrights, to propel them to new heights as cultural ambassadors of our city. Plays developed in the Rec Room Writers Group have received traction in Houston and beyond: Brendan Bourque-Sheil's Sunrise Coven premiered at Stages Repertory Theatre and Cincinnati's Know Theatre; ShaWanna Renee Rivon's Power to the Queendom had a workshop reading at Project Row Houses and she received a residency at the Ucross Foundation; Nicole Zimmerer was awarded a RespectAbility Entertainment Lab Fellowship and will have a play produced at B-Street Theatre in 2024: Elizabeth A.M. Keel’s play Break developed at Rec Room will have a full production at Haven Arts Theatre in the spring of 2024; Comfort Ifeoma Katchy was accepted into the playwriting program at Yale School of Drama and Alicia Margarita Olivo is a representative for the state of Texas for the 2022-2023 National Leaders of Color Fellowship.
Program Overview:
Throughout the course of the year, members of the Writers Group develop and workshop a new play, with the support of Rec Room and our resident dramaturgs.
Time: September 2023 - June 2024
Benefits:
Monthly Workshop Sessions – One Monday each month, the group meets from 7pm to 10pm. Each writer will sign up for two slots over the course of the year, to receive feedback on their work from the other writers and the workshop facilitators.
Dramaturgy Office Hours – In between monthly workshop sessions, writers are invited to attend one-on-one sessions with one of our resident dramaturgs.
Internal Play Readings – upon request, writers can schedule internal readings of their play
Group Writing Sessions – Throughout term of the Writers Group, Rec Room will open its space to the artists for writing sessions
Writers Group Application :
Application will be opened on June 15th and close on July 15th 2023.
Applicants will be notified by the end of July.
